I rely on the buoys for current conditions. Check out the buoy for Port Stanley (closest to LP) or Lake Erie East buoy. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45132 Sailflow seems to be more accurate these days than windfinder.

Andrew, if you are reading this, perhaps it would be a good idea to move the Forum page on the Main instead of the Blog. It makes more sense. Do what you think is best.

Technically, Kettle Point (KP) would be side-onshore in an east wind, but it would be very gusty because the wind is coming off the mainland. It IS a nice place to kite though. NW or N are good, and they are quite common direction there. A note on KP: There is an underwater patch of shale/rock with zebra mussles groing on them... The perfect foot shredding combo. Ask a kiter where this hazard is when you get to KP.

I've also kited Rondeau on the lake side. It is a pretty large beach, pretty quiet. It will cost $10 to enter the park. People also kite on the inner bay of Rondeau, but I'm not sure on the specifics of where they launch from. I've never kited Mitchells bay, but I saw it done (kind of) at kitestock, and it looks pretty good if there is someone to help you launch... I suspect there would be if there is wind.

We're all watching the wind report for this week like it's the second coming of Christ. Definitely promising but the direction is still variable. That beach in Sarnia looks good from the satellite images. You'd want to be carefull not to end up on the wrong side of the marina entrance. Were you at kitestock? Mitchells bay (town) is 1/2 hour from Sarnia. It works on N, W, S. If the wind is blowing East, then you can either go 1 1/2hr south to Rondeau Park (lakeside), or you can ride in michigan on Lake Huron. I looked at the satellite, and the beach appears to be one line-length wide most places.

Use something like Windfinder.com or Sailflow.com (both preferably). Wind direction is key. The current models are forecasting a wind direction change on wednesday, so keep an eye on it. Check the forcast 6 hours (at most) before you set out.

Matt is on Openkite! I dont know if he checks it very often though. About the 08 Helix. Dont worry I'm sure it will be fine for you to learn on. Any 7 is going to be twitchy, they are just so much faster. But it seemed to fly pretty nice when I had it for a second. I just know the 09 is more refined. Really direct bar feeling and super stable. But that's with all types of kite, every year the just get that much better. You definitely will want a bigger kite though something in the 10-12m range!

Oh yah, I saw the video - looks like a great day. I hear you about the waves. Keswick on a s/w is as flat as you can imagine. Even on n/w it doesn't get much chop at all. Learning there made my day at Delray with real waves a bit sketchy. See you at keswick

I hear you're looking for a used kite. I think the swaps are coming up at silent sports and boardsports. Could be a good place to go with a friend. I've bought and sold kites on ikitesurf.com/classifieds and also on ebay. Ebay can be very expensive, but you can also get huge scores. In March I bought a used 9 and looked for a while. I saw some sweet kites go on ebay for under $300 usd! I ended up getting a 2006 Cab Switchblade with bar & lines for $205USD - 225 with shipping to my inlaws in Florida. I picked it up during a family visit. I had to spend $100 to put a new bladder in though. It worked out to $400 CAD. It's tough to get anything decent for much less.
Two years ago I bought two kites from Josh - which is how I met him. I got a 12 and 9 2006 LF assault. I used them and sold them on ebay for more than I paid. I've now replaced them with Cabs and like them MUCH better than the LFs. The 09 LFs are much better than they used to be. Personally I would stay away from many of the brands out there except for waroo, cab, OR rise, or Naish boxer SLE (note early on they had a C-kite version of Boxer so make sure it's the sle). Don't touch any TD1 or TD2 - very bad. Also avoid Naish shockwave. I also heard that a number of 07's were more fragile than 06 and 08s. Check ikitesurf - here's a 2007 9m Waroo for $400 USD. Good luck

I was kiting keswick Saturday and it blew hard. I started on my 12 fully lit and ended up fully powered on my 9 switchblade. I had 2 lessons prior to kiting at keswick. Basically I learned to kite there. It's shallow for a long way and works on anything with some west in it - s/w - west - north. It can get a bit congested when you're learning - but that's pretty much everywhere. The shallows really helps when learning.
How'd you do at long beach? I bet the doming effect kept the wind down.
