Hey David,
That's great that you got out. I usually kite at kite beach in Keswick, although I've windsurfed all over for decades. There are a couple reasons it was so gusty the other day. First off, when there's the doming effect this time of year with warm winds. Second, s/w winds are always pretty lame there. It's best on N/W through W. Pure North has a big wind shadow, but you can drive up to roaches point a few minutes up the road. I've only windsurfed there - launching and landing a kite there would be a pain - but there's shallow enough water to walk it out and upwind.
Beaverton is really nice - one of my favorites with great parking and room to rig, launch etc. Best to ride N/W there too and you'll get some nice waves. West is ok, but it's pretty much on shore. The bay is pretty wide so it's workable, but best is N/W. It does also work on S/W but the wind is always much gustier and usually lighter.
There's also willow beach near jackson's pt - it's closer to the city, but I like beaverton better. You can get nice waves around willow - even better than beaverton, but N/W is pretty much on shore. Minett's point is ok too and pretty close right off the 400.
I can leave my house and be at keswick in less than 45 min - it's basically the closest kitable spot. Cherry is closer depending on the traffic but generally a much crappier place to ride - crappy wind, crappy direction, crappy water. Frenchman's is also closer - depending on the traffic. I only rode my first time there on Friday and it was less than ideal. A lot of guys go to Ashbridges in the summer, but I find the wind is crap there most of the time because of the direction. Best wind is N/W around the GTA - simcoe and georgian bay both have nice spots. West is pretty good for both too. Hamilton ain't bad either - depending on the front, wind speed etc can be a better bet.
Where do you live? Ever kite in Hamilton on the bay? Once you're near Hamilton it's definitely worth going to Erie which rocks on S/W.
Hi , I sure do remember. Are you still at the refinery? I see you are using Cabrinhas as well. I rember that your brother Ed became a teacher.....I'm retiring from being a high school principal this June.......for more "on the water" time
